I just finished the Dark Knights Metal story and I have to admit I was disappointed. Maybe I expected too much after all the great reviews I've read about the Metal event and how it was a positive change for the DC/Justice League universe. Well it looks like it will certainly change things but not for the better, in my opinion.Let me explain. I stopped buying individual comics years ago but I wait for graphic novels to arrive so I can catch up on complete story runs. So when a new events arrives I look forward to how the writers expand familiar characters, introduce new characters, and reintroduce old or forgotten characters. Metal did a great job on the last 2 of those treatments. I liked seeing how Hawkman was given a large and important role and I loved seeing glimpses of Metal Men, Challengers of the Unknown, and the Blackhawks. That's where the fun ended for me.The treatment of the Dark Multiverse feels weak and somewhat of a cheat by the writers. The DC Multiverse has always been based upon science fiction, or super science, in that it could be explained by universes simultaneously existing because of different spacial vibrational dimensions. Nothing in this Metal universe followed those "rules". The existence of this Dark realm was all based on magic instead of any logic. I know this is comics, but falling back on magic realms is a weak construct for the DC universe. It allows anything to be added, subtracted, changed, etc. while just staying " it was magic metal". Anyone can do that! Even the evil Batmen villains were weak because their backstories were all based on weak foundations - they were magical manifestations of Bruce Wayne's subconscious. Where is the originality in that??? I'm well aware that many stories in the DC world have been based on magical villains and battles, but not a whole universe!I hope I'm wrong but I fear this direction will weaken the JL series. What's stopping Batman from becoming superpowered by just getting another magic metal or some other crazy construct? Let's get back to strong story construction instead of becoming Star Wars in bright costumes.
