Daily Grind takes an extended coffee break from the Takeover series as it steps behind the counter of Grounds N'At. Readers of the series will remember Brian Keppler as Justin White's former employer and the person primarily responsible for keeping the team at SR Anderson well-caffeinated. That task becomes increasingly difficult for the owner/proprietor as his a labor of love steadily becomes simply labor when, more than a year later, he still hasn't managed to replace Justin.Brian's story begins on the first warm day of spring. After a late night out with his siblings, he finds himself in the shop after a barista calls in with a case of just-not-feeling-it. A newcomer makes working on his day off worth it, though. Brian's never really explored his attraction to men, but this tall, sexy Brit delivers innuendos with a delicious accent. Given the opportunity to get to know him better, Brian jumps on it.Robert Ancroft understands Brian's dedication to his coffee shop as well as anyone can. As the founder of tech company, Cirrobot, he's very familiar with the responsibilities associated with running a business. This greases the wheels while Brian and Robert are getting to know each other, but over time, Robert's understanding becomes an enabling force as Brian begins to self-destruct under stress. And while Robert loves Brian deeply, he finds himself in an uncomfortably familiar place with a lover who takes way more than he gives, if only accidentally.Any Takeover novel I read will be compared to Just Business. It's unfair, but I'm human and I can't help it. In that story, Zabo managed put two horribly damaged men in a room with space to dance and pulled from them a strange and passionate tango. The range of their humanity...their lights and their shadows...astonished me with its broadness. Due Diligence disappointed me through no fault of its own. It just had the misfortune of coming next.Daily Grind brings back a bit of the "dovetailed" interaction between the main characters that snared me in Just Business. Brian and Robert have a lot in common. They are magnetically attracted. They understand and respect the problems each other have. They are brought together by passion and pride, and later on, it's passion and pride that rips them apart. A happily ever after will require Brian to demonstrate Rob means more to him than Grounds N'At. It's a terribly big feat.I give Daily Grind 4.5 stars and recommend it to fans of the Takeover series, gay romance, and men in suits falling in love. Anna Zabo can write one helluva book! I loved the first two (three not as much) and this one is just as excellent, even without the kink. Brian is the owner of the coffee shop where Justin worked in "Just Business". The shop is struggling a bit and Brian is still short handed and overworked. Then Rob walks in and Brian sets his previously unexplored bisexual side free. I will say here that there was a very strong emphasis on his bisexuality and some of the dialogue was...unexpected. I could tell that the author was making a point about bi-erasure, which I heartily approve, but she didn't beat it to death either. The relationship building was shown perfectly, not just time in bed but out of it too. I could easily see all the connections that made them feel completely realistic. They were also mature, Rob is 40 and Brian 38, with compatible interests. The time in bed though? Scorching, passionate and intense. Brian is a virgin in man-on-man sex and eager to learn ev-er-y-thing!At the same time though, Brian in still far too consumed with the coffee shop. Eventually it does have an effect on Rob in the worst way. I did like that Rob was no doormat but he also wasn't unbending. I think the crisis point and resolution was balanced perfectly. Sam, Eli and Justin do show up in the story too. More importantly we meet Brian's no drama, nothing negative family. So refreshing! I'm thinking we'll see Brian's brother Len in a future book.I heartily recommend this story of sexy, mature, realistic and romantic men.
